The first answering light was their own.

Clay saw two flashes in the mist. His heart raced, his hand already on the shutter. Lan caught his wrist and made him wait.

Two more flashes came, at precisely his own interval.

“Wet glass over there,” she said.

An attendant shifted a windbreak panel, and the bright point vanished. Nobody laughed. The answer awaited for days had been only a railing away. For a moment, they did not know where to look.

Lan crossed out the entry and wrote SELF-REFLECTION beside it. She kept the sheet.

Canvas sheltered the outer corridor. The weather wire’s end had moved here from the dye works; the other end still reached the hilltop receiver that would not be moved. A repairer secured it along the wall, wrapped the final section in dry cloth, and tucked it beneath an overturned bowl. The woman’s time report emerged intermittently through static, like a voice at a long corridor’s end.

The west-shore clockwork had arrived too, secured in a wooden box. It kept its own time without following tower corrections. Ivo had written DO NOT ADJUST on the lid, then added: Especially anyone who thinks it’s slow.

Clay

Clay smiled.

He weighted the captain’s old sketch beneath the lamp. Of its two slanting lines, one now fell beyond the reef; the other nearly pointed into the hill behind them. The town lights still tried to illuminate every window, but from the sea resembled someone with tangled arms.

“Where will he be?” Clay asked.

“Outside the original waiting area,” Lan said. “If he received the reply.”

“If he didn’t?”

She shook her head, signaling him to watch first.

They sent brief messages in a fixed direction with ordinary lamps: lower the cover, lift, lower again. Clay had made such movements countless times for night vessels. Now he leaned forward at each pause, as if lending a little more of his body could carry the light farther.

Lan told him to sit.

“The farther you lean, the worse the direction.”

He fetched a low stool and stopped using his body as a windbreak.

No reply to the first round. None to the second. Miso slept against his boots, occasionally opening one eye at the shutter’s noise, checking for food, then closing it.

Half an hour passed outside; the town clocks gained a little more against theirs. A small difference, but on paper like two people walking together and slowly slipping out of step.

Lan wrote the new discrepancy beneath eleven minutes. That number could no longer be used directly.

“Tomorrow we don’t follow the town clock,” she said.

The attendant nodded, then asked, “If outside says Wednesday and here it’s Thursday, which date do we write?”

Lan wrote both dates and drew one vertical line between them.

“For action, outside time plus the elapsed time on this clockwork. Keep the town date too. Don’t scramble the clocks trying to fix the calendar first.”

Clay remembered disembarking and thinking the islanders could not even get the weekday right. He had not imagined that missing day becoming a narrow gap they must cross together.

Wind lifted the canvas. The sun finally slipped below the cloud, nowhere near sunset, but the low cloud allowed light through only a narrow opening.

A white point flashed beyond the reef.

It did not follow their intervals. After pausing, it shifted left and flashed three times.

Lan stood.

Clay asked nothing. He covered his lamp three times, sent an arbitrarily chosen number, and waited.

The distant light returned that number, then another.

No old action preserved in light. Someone had seen them and was answering afresh.

Clay tried to speak, but no sound came. He looked for his pen and found it already between his fingers.

The reply came from the ferry.

The captain had received their western-swell letter. All eleven passengers had reached the outer harbor safely. The ferry had replenished water and food. Four crew waited outside in shifts. Several family letters had arrived too; replies awaited aboard.

Each line traveled slowly. Explaining that everyone was settled took far more effort than telling a small story over a table. Clay was willing to wait through every pause.

Lan copied the news for an attendant to send to school, specifically naming the raincoat woman and Oren. She continued receiving time signals, letting good news displace no necessary work.

The captain could see three unstable town lights. He requested one long closure of their new ordinary lamp to identify it.

Clay 照做。

Clay complied.

The white point returned a clear confirmation.

Next, Lan had the captain move between two known navigation markers outside. The ferry stayed in safe water, away from the disconnected edge. She and Clay alternated recording the light while another attendant timed by the clockwork. Tide reports, that morning’s water measurements, and directions seen aboard were compared at the same moment by living people for the first time.

Cloud hid the sun again. The white point disappeared briefly. Lan stopped writing and waited for its return, leaving the gap instead of inventing a pleasing line.

Their fingers grew cold, but finally they obtained a period much narrower than “around dawn.”

By the outside date and time, it lay between 5:16 and 5:24 the next morning. The closest alignment would be shorter still: they must prepare for only five minutes. Actual action required confirmation from outside that the two fixed navigation marks lined up with the town light. Without that confirmation, reaching the written time meant no movement.

Clay

Clay repeated the condition and sent it to the captain.

The reply came: Understood. No boarding first. Watch the lights first.

Clay read the final words, remembering his step beyond the warning bar before this seventh day.

“Steadier than I am,” he said.

“He carries other people,” Lan answered.

Clay 点头。

Clay nodded.

They arranged the actions individually. Clear the old east shore and sealed western section first, promising neither restoration. Prepare the new lenses with every shutter closed. After outside confirms the window, lower the old iron curtain; someone below must visually report no remaining gap. Clay’s branch releases the old debt. Then people at separate stations align to the same external point, retaining their own perspectives, and open the new light in sequence.

If someone withdraws, seal that branch first; a standby takes over from outside, without ordering the original observer to endure. If a section floods or cannot be identified, leave it for later rather than dragging the town toward the old direction. If outside contact fails or the curtain fails to seat, no new lenses open. Before the final stop, the old curtain’s withdrawal can still halt. Beyond it, settlement begins; they cannot put the same person back and try again.

Clay

Clay drew a thick line beside that stop.

Lan studied it.

“You have to do this part yourself,” she said.

“I know.”

“Not someone calling that it’s time for you.”

“I know.”

Another offshore question arrived: What supplies are needed?

Clay looked at Lan. She suddenly laughed, a little bewildered, unsure where to begin.

They finally named medicine, flour, dry clothes, and sound rope, then added wheelchair bearings. The captain told them not to request too much at once. Cabin space was needed for departing residents.

In that sentence, leaving had become something whose weight could be planned.

Lan wrote her name in the margin but did not transmit it.

“Want to send a letter?” Clay asked.

“I don’t know whom to write to.”

She placed her two foreign coins beneath the ordinary lamp. Fine edge lettering and patterns appeared that neither recognized.

“We could ask if anyone in the outer harbor knows them,” Clay said.

After studying them, she nodded.

He transmitted their shape and distinguishable markings. The captain replied that nobody aboard recognized them, but he would take rubbings to ask at other ports. No declaration of discovery, no promise requiring an immediate decision.

Lan put them away.

“The yellow thing in the kitchen,” she said suddenly. “I dreamed about it again.”

Clay

Clay did not ask whether it had restored an entire home.

“Someone called me to help. I turned, and there was nothing.”

She rubbed the paper beside the table edge.

“I still want to look.”

“Yes.”

“I’ll take the outer corridor tomorrow. After that shift, perhaps I’ll board someday.”

“As long as there’s a place.”

She glanced at him and smiled faintly. Nobody was promising to deliver her to the correct world. She had simply kept a direction in which she could continue.

At dusk, Ivo’s reply arrived. Using the outside observations, he redrew the stations and removed a low-lying branch too close to the western break. Even if it lit tomorrow, nobody could enter. He also stated that the new network would initially require continuous rotations. Once stable, only measurements could justify shorter watches. Nobody could promise in advance that attendance would someday be unnecessary.

At the corner he wrote: This clock isn’t slow. Stop saying it is.

Clay

Clay pinned it to the wooden box.

Dr. T’s supervisor read all the observations and asked for a copy. Lan gave one, insisting it retain outside confirmation, failure conditions, and unproven portions, not merely the half-page resembling an answer.

Before they finished, the ferry sent one last nontechnical question.

Is the gentleman with the dog still there?

Clay

Clay answered yes.

Your change is still here.

He bowed his head and laughed until his eyes stung. Miso woke at the movement, looked up, and failed to understand such happiness with empty hands.

Clay

Clay stroked his head and sent the final reply.

Keep it for me a little longer.
