Dr. T was replacing a chair leg.
Two dining-hall lamps were off; the last stood on the floor. Kneeling beside it on his folded coat, he hammered a freshly cut wedge into a crack. The pocket that had held pegs remained torn, loose thread trailing on the floor.
Clay
He did not look up when Clay entered.
“I read the records.”
Clay placed his documents on the table. Mr. Platypus followed and checked their numbers against the matching school copy before sitting.
“And tonight’s staffing,” Clay said.
“That too.”
Dr. T turned the chair upright and pressed its back. It still wobbled. He inverted it again and continued packing the short leg.
Clay 等着。
Clay waited.
When they worked together, Dr. T always repaired something repairable before answering a difficult question: chair, kettle, broken latch. Small objects had definite failures and bought a few minutes before larger problems.
Dr. T 说。
“You dropped the low street,” Dr. T said.
“Yes.”
“You’re deciding what to abandon too.”
“These are the places we dare try to hold first. The low-street residents have come up. Their things remain.”
Dr. T rose against the chair back. His knee stiffened, leaving his hand braced on the table for a long moment.
“When the new lenses open and somewhere else falls away, will you say you’re almost there and ask for one more night?”
Clay
Clay watched him.
“I might want to.”
“How does that differ from me?”
“That’s why one person shouldn’t decide anymore.”
Unpersuaded, Dr. T uncovered that night’s tower record on the wall for Clay to read.
The dye works had been stopped for most of the day, yet the old light’s deviation grew. Cutting off the west briefly reduced the load; then it rose again. Red pencil marked the morning tide. The trace had not reached it, but the needle was already close to the paper’s edge.
“You see it too,” Clay said.
Dr. T 点头。
Dr. T nodded.
“I could retreat another two sectors.”
“To where?”
“Tower and school.”
“For how long?”
No answer.
A child coughed in the corridor. Someone hurried past carrying water. They all paused until the sound moved away.
Dr. T pushed the repaired chair to the table. Clay sat. It was steady. That little success saddened him more than when he arrived.
“I’m not asking you to guarantee the new method,” he said. “You know the old one can’t guarantee they survive tomorrow.”
“The new method distributes risk to everyone.”
“Yes. Even people who didn’t choose it.”
Clay placed Bena’s record on top: objections, gaps, unproven claims intact. He did not say they had collectively made an innocent decision. The ferry could not dock; people could not simply walk out. Their past actions had already narrowed choice severely.
“They should at least know which two sectors you mean to retreat from,” he added. “If you continue the old method, take that diagram outside too.”
Dr. T looked at the crowded bed counts beside it.
Mr. Platypus put another envelope on the table and unwound three turns of cord. It held no new roster, only seven years of renewals he had handled, chronologically arranged, the first pages yellowed.
“This goes outside too,” he said.
Dr. T turned two pages and stopped at his signature.
“The ground beneath the school was already gone then.”
“The original record says so,” Mr. Platypus replied.
“If we hadn’t acted, the children—”
“It says people were saved that day too.”
Dr. T’s fingers stopped.
“We don’t have to erase that day to question the next seven years.”
Only the lamp’s faint hum remained.
Clay looked toward the town model in the tea room. Days ago, Dr. T had pointed out its roads. Now several western wooden pieces had been removed, leaving pale glue marks. The model’s gaps were tidy; the real gaps were full of things nobody had managed to carry out.
Dr. T 说。
“I remember when that street first existed,” Dr. T said.
Clay
Clay turned back.
“You said I’d drawn the harbor too beautifully. Workers had nowhere for scrap wood. I said we’d leave space once it was built. You dumped shavings on the table.”
Clay remembered. They argued late. Eventually someone removed a beautiful, useless pavilion from the model, clearing space for a real harbor.
“I’ll still remember the street,” Dr. T said. “Perhaps not why you were beside it.”
Clay
Clay had not expected him to mention that first.
Dr. T removed his spectacles. His eyes were red. The frame turned halfway in his hands, then stopped.
“I thought if I kept repairing, loss would come more slowly.”
“In some places it did,” Clay said.
“Yet you all ended up here.”
“We have to go on from here.”
A knock brought the latest western-light reading. Dr. T took it and automatically raised his pen to order a section restored. As the tip touched paper, he stopped.
Nobody lived there anymore.
He returned the sheet to the supervisor, ordered the section kept closed, then requested the bypass handle.
Clay did not immediately rise. Only when the brass handle, wrapped in old cloth, lay on the table did his hands slowly release his knees.
Dr. T took the key from his inner pocket and laid it beside the handle.
“Who keeps the key?” the supervisor asked.
“Tonight you and the school record its custody together.” Dr. T looked at Mr. Platypus. “Set a new arrangement afterward. It mustn’t end up in one person’s pocket again.”
“The stored lenses?” Clay asked.
“Bring them out. Both work. One has a cracked edge. Keep it out of the wind.”
He went to the bypass door without demanding a promise from Clay or asking whether anyone would forgive him tomorrow.
The stiff lock rasped as it opened.
Inside was hotter than Clay remembered. Copper pipes climbed the wall. Fine dust covered the floor. In a corner stood the empty replacement-lens frame. The apparatus Lan had refused remained, its name field blank. Nobody had quietly entered someone else after her refusal.
Dr. T removed its short linkage to the main light and gave it to the supervisor.
“This stays disconnected tomorrow.”
He showed Clay the actual stop. The first part of the shaft’s travel lowered the thick iron curtain. The final short section disengaged the old reference. Between them was a holding notch. Inspection and release must not become one action.
Clay
Clay put his hand on the handle to test his position, without turning it.
Dr. T indicated the heaviest point, where old oil might bind, and the C-17 reference frame inside the main lamp. The thin copper plate from Clay’s coat was only a portable maintenance tag with the same number. Clay returned it to its envelope and verified the actual point to release. Only then did Dr. T step aside.
They went below to the inspection window. The supervisor repeated the sequence: clearing sludge required the old curtain at its temporary stop and side light to the groove blocked, then scraping through the lower opening. Tools had a length limit; no hand could enter beneath the curtain. If it failed to seat, all new lenses stayed closed and the final stop remained uncrossed.
The instructions did not soothe Clay, but gave him something to grasp during tomorrow’s fear.
After midnight, the tower storeroom opened too.
Workers carried lenses, Oren borrowed a cart, and the sewing-machine owner padded the cracked edge with saved cloth. Unwilling to observe, she sat by an oil lamp stitching broad grip straps onto every shutter curtain. Bena complained the straps looked too soft, tested one herself, then withdrew the criticism.
Ivo’s drawing lay on the ground-level box. Others connected long wires and gathered spare coils so nobody withdrawing at dawn would trip. He checked from his seat and sent others to high places. Briefly closing his exhausted eyes, he woke when his pen fell.
Clay
Clay retrieved it and laid it on his uninjured side.
He did not ask him to hold on a little longer.
At two in the morning, each station reported ready in order. Every new lens remained shuttered. Ordinary lamps provided illumination; the town still lived in the old light. Dr. T signed the preparation sheet, then recorded his prior continued use of the old reference and failure to notify the people involved. Mr. Platypus took both into custody.
“Tomorrow you may not remember why you wrote it,” the archivist reminded him.
Dr. T 说。
“I’ll still read the words,” Dr. T said.
Descending, Clay saw the repaired chair in the corridor. The coughing child sat on it, feet above the floor, while his mother slowly cooled a cup.
The bypass door was open.
The people inside still needed water fed to them sip by sip.
