At half past four, Clay finished his water outside the lantern room.
It was warm, the cup bottom still tea-stained. He considered taking it inside, feared breaking it in the rush, and left it on the small table by the door, handle outward.
Wheels sounded on paving below. Oren was taking spare cloth to school, moving slowly to avoid waking anyone. Only ordinary lamps lit the street. Behind black coverings, the new lenses resembled temporarily unused windows.
Miso slept on his own blanket in an inner classroom. He had followed Clay to the door, taking longer than expected to settle again. The elderly woman watching him secured a curled blanket corner with a peg and promised to stay.
Clay believed her and still returned to stroke him once.
He could not return now.
Dr. T checked the final shaft inside, coat off, cuffs tied. The joints of his burned hand bent unnaturally. Below, the supervisor stood by the inspection window with a scraper fitted with a limiting block. Its newly shaved handle was paler than the other tools.
Clay
Clay took his place at the brass handle and pressed his bandage firmly once more.
Seven years ago, amid different panic, he had signed for forty-two hours. People cried and urged haste. He thought once the school reconnected, everything else could be arranged later. He had not seen himself seven years on, a chair, a dismantled sewing machine, a table where tastes must be asked anew.
He could not see every future now either.
He knew only where to stop this time, and who must be able to call a halt.
At 4:40, Lan reported from the outer corridor: weather line working, difference between clockwork and outside signal recorded. Before leaving, she had told Clay her helmet remained uphill. Tonight she need not bring the old voices.
“Wind outside,” she said. “Ferry present. Both fixed marks present. Not yet.”
Clay 答。
“Heard,” Clay replied.
They used speaking tubes cleared of water overnight. The sound remained hollow. Lan waited for each echo to fade.
Anya reported testing the school shutter. Then came the small sound of Nora putting down a cup. She said she was moving the tea clear of her sleeves before checking positions. Their reports were concrete: which fixed nail lay left of view, which roofline stood above the offshore marker, whether the shutter dropped when released.
Nobody announced what they were prepared to sacrifice.
They said only that they were ready.
At 4:50, the school reported the first problem: wind had lifted the return-light line’s rain covering. The repairer had rewrapped it; no leak yet. Ivo demanded a separate red mark for the bakery back-street branch. Even if it seemed sound later, it must not be reported with the main line.
Clay found it on the drawing. It served the low rear eaves and return mirror; the primary observation post was higher upstairs. The first ring could abandon that branch, losing the rear approach. Upstairs occupants would withdraw by the high road.
“Follow the drawing,” he said.
“I know,” Ivo answered through another tube.
Clay
Clay set it down without adding be careful.
After five, the old light began wavering.
It was no electrical flicker. The platform’s round shadow seemed pressed by a hand, narrowing suddenly seaward. Tools remained on the wall, yet Clay felt half a step farther from them.
Dr. T slowly eased back an overheating wheel mount. The pointer fell slightly, then immediately rose.
“Any farther?” Clay asked.
“The school goes first if I do.”
Both looked at the time.
A few missing minutes could not push the sea forward.
Clay
Clay suddenly heard three distant knocks.
A pause, then two.
Through the east window, the yellow afternoon still hung amid dawn’s gray. The figure bent at its window, arm rising and falling. Through so many real nights, he had kept that afternoon’s warmth.
Clay
Clay did not call Nora to look.
5:16 arrived.
The outer corridor said not yet.
Heat descended the walls. Tar scented the room. Clay stood with his thumb repeatedly pressing the handle’s notch. Dr. T wrapped a neighboring bearing in wet cloth without urging him.
Another report: left mark aligned, right in fog, unconfirmed.
Someone coughed at school. Anya said she could continue and had tested the shutter. Bena reported standby positions, clearly saying everyone was present without crowding anyone farther forward.
Clay looked up to find Dr. T watching him.
“Without confirmation,” Dr. T said, “you’ll stop?”
“Yes.”
Dr. T nodded and tightened the wet cloth.
Then the voice outside changed.
“Both marks aligned. Outside confirmation repeated. Five seventeen forty.”
Clay
Clay pushed the handle through its first stage.
It was heavier than rehearsal. Bracing his arm with his shoulder, he slowly passed the tightest inch. The thick curtain descended inside the wall, low friction traveling from above to below. The old light did not vanish at once. It narrowed into a long slit across wall stains.
“Temporary stop,” he reported.
Below confirmed visual contact.
The scraper entered; salt crust fell. Clay heard metal strike metal, once too loudly, then stop. The supervisor adjusted and pushed again. Dr. T watched the shaft without reaching across Clay to seize it.
“Groove clear. Withdraw tool.”
“Tool withdrawn.”
Clay pushed another half-inch. The curtain reached bottom. The room darkened to the ordinary lamp’s yellow circle.
No immediate answer from below.
Clay
Clay’s pulse filled his ears.
“A gap?”
“Right side. Wait.”
He held before the notch, leaving the final stage untouched.
All new lenses closed. Lan reported the latest direction steadily, without revealing how many seconds she watched them spend. The scraper moved again below, shivering briefly, then a hard object dropped into the tray.
“Lower again.”
Clay
Clay eased back slightly and pressed down.
This time the curtain landed with a heavy, complete sound.
Below checked left, then right, then the bottom seam from another angle.
“Fully seated. No light leak. Tools clear.”
Dr. T removed his hand from the shaft.
The final stop lay beneath Clay’s palm. For seven years, others had passed beyond his consent and continued for him on paper. Now everyone waited in their own position.
He did not summon every face worth remembering. Faces obeyed no such command; another recollection could not make them safe. He thought only of Nora telling him to open the door tomorrow, Ivo refusing to let him write the clock story, and a dog weighing down a classroom blanket.
“Lamp room. Releasing old reference,” he said.
Then he pressed past the stop.
There was no crash.
First the weight beneath his hand lightened. The C-17 frame disengaged slightly from its mating surface, resting in its slot. The inward-gathering light seemed to lose the hand holding it and withdrew upward along the walls.
The yellow afternoon outside the east window dimmed.
Before Clay could tell whether the final knocking finished, that window became an empty patch over the sea. Eli, the blue cloth, the never-lifted cup had not transferred elsewhere. At least now, he could no longer see them.
Someone drew breath in a speaking tube.
Nora did not cry out. She reported only, “Bakery in position.”
Clay 说。
“Open new lenses,” Clay said.
The first shutter lifted. The fixed offshore mark entered town from three different angles, landing on their agreed edges. The newly installed lens brightened. Light no longer gathered toward Clay’s body. It passed him and pointed outside.
The school reported stable; the bakery reported a downstairs doorframe aligning from both sides again.
Then Nora’s voice paused.
“I just…”
Clay 转头。
Clay turned.
“I’ve forgotten the last number I reported.”
Bena immediately had the standby read the record. Nora confirmed her direction remained clear and prepared to change after this report. Nobody praised her into holding on.
Old-debt settlement and brief new-observation gaps occurred together. Clay could not distinguish each loss for her in those seconds. He could keep his uncertainty from obstructing her withdrawal.
He was about to confirm the rotation when a crash sounded from the school tube.
“Return light two is wrong!”
Ivo.
The corridor saw it too. The back-street mirror, formerly one point, became two. Wave water sprayed beneath the low eaves, soaking the covering and pooling along the glass’s lower edge. One direction followed the fixed mark; the other reversed in the water.
The new light began to drift.
The reference frame before Clay shook. A hollow sound came from behind the old slot. Dr. T instinctively reached for the old shaft, then withdrew before touching it.
“No return to the old insert,” Clay said.
“Understood.”
At school, Ivo ordered people away from the drain before the junction box. Then came wheels being dragged sharply.
“Stop pulling the wheelchair back!” he shouted. “I can’t reach the handle.”
“Your foot—”
“Block the wheel. Come to my right.”
Clay could not see, only hear casters scraping stone and a wooden block kicked beneath a wheel. He desperately wanted to go outside and verify Ivo’s position himself. Unstable light separated tower and school. The wish arose with the knowledge that he could not get there.
“Isolating number two,” Ivo reported.
Clay
Clay checked the drawing. The main observer remained at the high window. The wet part was the back-street circuit.
He did not make Ivo wait for a second order.
The tube carried the sound of a brass handle descending. The split beam went dark. The bakery’s rear eaves sank into gray, but its upstairs light still faced the sea.
“High road remains. Rear road out,” Ivo said.
The corridor reported the two markers distinct again.
Clay gripped the table edge and discovered his whole body shaking. There was no time for shame.
In another tube, Nora’s replacement confirmed the same point. Nora lowered her shutter and stepped away; the replacement opened their own beside it. The corridor demanded no identical pictures, only verification that they meant the same fixed offshore mark.
Handover complete.
Nora truly left the station.
The new light did not keep her inside it.
Clay wanted to call her name. Before he spoke, Dr. T turned, looking at him with faint confusion.
“You’re…”
Then he saw the station sheet by the table.
Lamp room: Clay. Old reference released. Do not reconnect. New lenses open. Await outside confirmation.
Dr. T’s gaze moved once between paper and face, then he lowered his head to guard his own shaft. Forgetting why he trusted someone did not make him immediately dismantle the stranger’s work.
Clay
Clay drew a small breath.
It caught painfully in his chest.
A new voice came from school: the archivist reminding everyone to report by position. Rehearsed words returned through the tubes, mixed with questions, pauses, turning pages. Someone asked who had just given the order. Bena told him to read his next item first. Anyone able to stop still could.
The old debt was leaving this world, taking no grand farewell, but a face these people had just known why they recognized.
Clay
Clay remembered everything.
Dr. T picking shavings from the model. Ivo denying the ladder shook. Nora laughing into her hand last night to spare the sleeping children.
He laid a hand on his station sheet and read the next line.
“Outer corridor, confirm outside.”
Lan did not answer at once.
For several seconds even the weather report vanished. The attendant urgently reported that wind had overturned the protective bowl, wetting the connector. He was pressing it dry.
Lan’s voice came from farther away. “You handle the wire. I’m watching the marks. The clockwork’s running.”
Clay watched his watch. Losing the time broadcast did not erase the sea. But losing outside contact too would require pausing expansion.
Finally her voice returned.
“Ferry confirms three lights consistent. Checking again.”
Clay 等着。
Clay waited.
The ordinary clock moved one mark, then another. Nobody pulled him back into old light. The scorched second slot remained empty. New light passed around it from another direction, reaching farther water.
“Confirmed again,” Lan said. “Direction steady. First ring can hold.”
Shortly after 5:21, the main lamp completed its seaward turn.
It was still dark. The beam swept the waves and dissolved far away in moisture. It stopped on no person. It left sight briefly, then returned on its new course.
Clay
Clay released the handle.
His fingers felt foreign and took time to open. The old C-17 frame could now be removed. He wrapped it in cloth and placed it in an empty box, leaving it in no slot from which it could reconnect itself.
Seeing his bleeding hand, Dr. T offered clean cloth.
他说。
“Press here,” he said.
Clay 接了。
Clay accepted it.
They did not embrace. Dr. T retained the polite look of a stranger, not knowing why the man’s eyes were red and not asking.
Second shifts began rotating, checking doors, walls, and ground section by section. The new light still needed tending. The wet branch stayed closed. Gray-white sea occupied the old east shore. No bell declared everything well.
But someone at school opened a door, walked through, and returned.
Through the bakery tube, another person asked whose tea this was. Nora said hers, then paused and said nothing more.
Clay
Clay listened with a hand beside the tube. He offered no reminder.
The corridor relayed the captain’s last question.
May we try approaching?
Clay
Clay did not simply say yes.
He had the school confirm the high road, the shore crew inspect the moorings, and Lan check both outside marks again. People repeated his instructions to replacements who did not know him. They went in order and reported what they actually saw.
Only once the seaward-most section was confirmed did he answer the corridor.
“Come to the outer mark first. We’ll watch together.”
